STUDENT PLACEMENT in NORTH VANCOUVER SCHOOLS

The location of a student's residence will usually determine the school in which the student is placed.

  1. Parents may identify the school to which a student should apply for placement by contacting the school board or the Student Placement Officer.
  2. After identifying the "neighbourhood school", a parent or guardian should  complete a registration form at that school. (parents may be asked to provide residency verification and documents related to the child's grade level placement).
  3. The principal will determine if the school has the resources or the space available to accommodate the student.
  4. If the student cannot be accommodated at this time, the following procedure will take place.
  5. The student's name will be placed on a waiting list (the registration form will be kept in a wait list file).
  • The principal will find an alternative placement for the
  • student in another school.
  • Should space become available during the school year, the parents or guardians of wait listed students will be contacted, in order, and offered the space. If a space is refused, the parent or guardian will be informed that the student's name will remain on the wateriest for placement at the start of the following school year.
  • If the parent or guardian wishes to remove the student's name from the wateriest, the student will remain at the current school.
  • By April 30, or before school organizational plans for the following school year are being considered, parents of children who remain on the wateriest will be contacted to be advised that their children will be included in the enrolment count for their neighbourhood school. If, at this time, the parent chooses to remove the student's name from the wait list, the student remains on the enrolment of the current school.
RECEPTION, ASSESSMENT, and PLACEMENT (RAP) CENTRE

The RAP Centre welcomes all students not born in Canada whether they speak English as the second language (ESL) or English as the
first language. Appointments are necessary and can be made by contacting the RAP Centre directly.

The following will be examined at the RAP Centre during the appointment.

  • immigration papers

  •
  • residency verification

  •
  • school records

  •
  • health records
ESL students will receive a detailed assessment of language and math proficiency. A parent or legal guardian will complete a family history. The RAP Centre is also responsible for tracking Student authorizations and temporary residences.

Students, both English and ESL, will be referred to their neighbourhood school based on the location of their residence. The RAP Centre will forward to the school an assessment summary sheet that profiles the student. Parents will report to their neighbourhood school and fill our a registration form for their child(ren).
The principal will determine if the school has the resources or the space available to accommodate the student. If the student cannot be accommodated at this time, the procedure will be the same as that under "STUDENT PLACEMENT".
